The people behind the scenes: Management up close

Anne Mathieu
Chairwoman Managing Director / CEOI wanted to work in a company where people are respected and where I can be completely enthusiastic about the 'product'. I found that at eurobahn!
She studied business administration in France, the USA and Belgium. She started her professional career as an accountant and controller in Germany in the food packaging industry. After several years with an automotive supplier, she was sent to Shanghai with her family (a husband and 3 children) as Finance Manager. There she later took on a position as Managing Director in the steel industry. When she moved to Brazil, she later took over responsibility for Latin America in the areas of finance, IT and HR.
As it was her wish to return to Germany, she started in 2018 in Düsseldorf, where she has lived ever since, as CFO and Managing Director of eurobahn and became Managing Director in 2020.
Questions and answers
What did you want to do as a child?
I didn't have one, I didn't know exactly what I wanted to do until I got my first job. I never had a career plan, I just took opportunities. Except when I was looking for my last job: I really wanted a "product" that I was passionate about and a company where people were respected. I found that at eurobahn!
How do you explain to your friends what you do?
I make sure that trains run as reliably as possible.
What should the management never do?
Get annoyed.
How do you start your day at the office? Describe the first ten minutes.
I start my computer and while it's booting up, I go to the kitchen to prepare my tea and walk through the corridor to greet my colleagues who are already there.
And what does a perfect day off from work look like for you?
It doesn't matter where or what, but with my family!

As a young boy, Karsten Schulz wanted to look after four-legged furry friends or feathered creatures. Today we know that his enthusiasm for modern means of transport with lots of horsepower has been kindled. After leaving school, he decided to study civil engineering, specialising in transport. His parents ran a road construction and civil engineering company in Düsseldorf for many decades, a foundation stone that had a positive influence on him.
Questions and answers
What did you want to do as a child?
As a child, I always wanted to be a vet. However, I decided to study civil engineering, specialising in transport engineering. My parents ran a road construction and civil engineering company in Düsseldorf for many decades, which had a significant influence on me in my later youth. To this day, I have never regretted this and would always make the same decision again.
How do you explain to your friends what you do?
We make sure that our passengers get to their destinations safely, reliably and in a climate-friendly way. This requires a very broad-based interdisciplinary team that is fully committed to achieving our goals.
What should the management never do?
lose sight of our goals.
How do you start your day in the office? Describe the first ten minutes.
The first thing I do is greet my colleagues, then I boot up my computer and check my diary for the day. I enjoyed my first coffee on the journey to the office. A quick check of the latest emails and then straight into the first regular meeting, the daily briefing, to get an initial picture of the operational situation.
And what does a perfect day off from work look like for you?
Breakfast in the morning and spending time with my family and dog. In the afternoon, a nice motorbike tour and in the evening we have friends over for dinner. All in glorious weather, of course.
